Hi Scott,

I would appreciate your advice on your Ride.

In my youth, we were always messing around in kayaks, decades later, I am looking for the "right" kayak for me for fishing out of and I would appreciate your advice. I have four kayaks on my list and the Ride is one of them. The other three are WS’s Tarpon, OK’s Scupper Pro and the Scrambler XT.

At 6’2” and 200 pounds, the Scrambler did not provide the stable platform from which I wanted to fish. So, I started looking at these four models. Other than the Ride, the other three models were recommended to me. When I came across the Ride, it appeared that it would provide me with a very stable platform as it had a wide beam. I spoke with a knowledgeable yakman with 20 active years in yaks and he felt all four boats were excellent except for the use of the Ride on the ocean. This surprised me.

Scott, you have four years of experience with your Ride, so hopefully, you will address the point that he made. This person loved the Ride, except for its tendency to broach when coming back to the beach. His statement was emphatic that it almost always rolls over because of the unique hull shape.

I would sincerely appreciate your thoughts on this broaching issue.

Aside from the above, what would you consider the Ride’s strengths and weaknesses?

This weekend I am going up to Oxnard to Channel Islands Kayak and try our a few boats. I am not sure if I can get them to let me take the Ride out to the surf.

Thanks a lot,

Steve Armanino
