Both models are pelagic, the difference being the longfin is found DEEP and has a bigger eye, probably due to the fact that it seaches for its prey in such deep water. The shortfin is fished in deep water, but at the top or near top of the water colum. I've fished makos quite a bit and that big girl was definitely shortfin Mako, to bad they didn't just take some pictures.
