We've been using these little gizmos for a few years (remember the school janitor's key chain; same concept). Specifically the ones made by Cetacea. We've been advocates of their products long before acquiring them as a sponsor. I use one to secure my VHF radio to my person (retractor allows about 2 ft of leash) and one larger size (80lb chord allowing about 3ft of leash) one to secure my game (divers) clip to one of my tank straps.

Cetacea's diving products (also used for kayaking & kayak fishing) are built to take the abuse from the ocean environment. I've seen more retractors lately on the market that do not hold up like the ones Cetacea make. Cetacea also back up their retractors with a lifetime warranty (the others I've seen do not).

Cetacea also manufactures leashes and tethers for your fishing rods.
