If you saw the pictures in the other post, there were not many other fish caught beside those out of 120 participants.

I woke up at 2:00 am with a pounding headache. Since I could not get back to sleep I drove from El Cajon to La Jolla. It was wild to see everyone already there at 3:00 am. At 4:00 am groups of kayaks started to leave the beach. Since I had never launched at night I took my time getting ready and finally lauched at 4:30. Paddling to the bait boat seemed shorter in the dark. After picking up some sardines, I made the mistake to go find some macs. If there was a contest for catching macs I would have won. I stripped the bait rig down to three and tipped it with squid and brought it up full every time.

I was dragging some squid at the bottom while bait fishing and had two pickups and runs only to be spit out. I trolled a green back for a couple of hours before a seal bit it off at the head. I also had a hook up on a crome prism croc that was spit out half way to the boat. Near noon I was drifting in the kelp and in a clearing something big picked up my squid and ran like a freight train. It broke loose and the leader came up shreaded.

I dumped in the surf for the first time and lost my cheapo sungalsses. I made it to the party on time barely, with the 3rd place winner Damon (16 lb YT) kind of like Spike's tourney, but a I made it on time. Thanks to Damon talking me into going to the party insted of driving home I left with a new paddle in the raffle.

Jim ran a fist class tourney. Cool T-Shirts. This was my first time at LJ (what first time experience for me, in the dark lol!) You guys are spoiled, drive right up on the beach, easy launch and a nice big area to fish. Everyone was super nice and it was wild to see so many yaks out fishing all at the same time. Some PBer called us "pathetic kayaks" on channel 71 cause we were in his way for trolling. Then he followed up by saying he was there first.....LMAO!

A great time. Looking forward to Jerry's next week.
