Jerry Esten’s 6th Annual Kayak Fishing Derby
Sunday September 29th 2002, King Harbor, Redondo Beach, CA

Although rain and drizzle were forecast we saw mostly sunny skies. The barries disappeared, the party boats out of Redondo only picked up a few. (80 the day before)
No complaints though, surely none for Louis Ciminiere who won the day with a 6.7 pound halibut. “Scupper Lou” took home a new “Caper” kayak presented by Ocean Kayak and their able rep, Mark Olson. Lou also garnered a $100.00 jackpot . Time to accessorize Lou!
Veteran kayak angler Jack Lameroux landed 4.7-pound triggerfish! Though a trigger is an unusual catch, two were taken. Maybe this is a harbinger of El Nino? Jack won a Seeker rod from West Marine.
Jim Hennelley motored up from San Diego and caught a hefty Sand bass that weighed exactly the same as the triggerfish, 4.7 pounds.
Jim picked up a fine Penn rod courtesy of radio and TV personality, Ronnie Kovach.

Ron Gewerth of Camarillo landed a 2.7-pound sandie and won a Penn reel form Lincoln-Pico Sporting good of Santa Monica.
The West Marine store In Marina Del Rey was very supportive, Thanks to David Kirby the manager.
A Kencor rod, the “Panga” especially made for kayakers was won by Tom Ridderbush of Camarillo. A variety of kayak accessories were given by Xstreamline kayaks, Accurate Reel Frame, Rhynobar from Jeff Krieger, Coastal Kayak Fishing awarded an assortment of Plano products and kayak accessories, as did Xstreamline Kayaks of Wilminigton
All the participants got “goodie bags” with a variety of tackle. Names Like Izorline, Heddon , Rebel, Ande, Power-Pro,Lucky Craft, Mustad, Fish Trap , AA soft plastics, Luhr-Jensen, MDR Sportfishing, Helgren’s Sportfishing, Aftco, Scotty, Braid Tackle, The Fishin’ Fools, Granada Hills, STORM Lures,
West Coast Angler.com, Pelican, Jim Sammons of San Diego, The list is interminable. My apologies to any one overlooked.
Some awards were especially unique , The famed Claim Jumper’s restaurants gave us , get this now!, $500.00 in meals in these fine eateries.
I think I can safely state, “A good time was had by all
