Went out at Leffingwells (Cambria) Friday. Surf wasn't a factor. A little misty but no wind. Though the water was really mucky (bad vis). First drop on the 5 1/2" Swimbait nailed a nice Ling. Thought the bite was on fire until 3 more hours of fishing only produced one more Ling (my buddy Dave on whole squid). A bunch of other Rockfish but no Reds. Later that night we put the marinated Ling fillet chunks on skewers with mushrooms, onions, bell peppers and tomatos (BBQ). Oh yea!!!
We hooked up with Brendan from Santa Cruz later that night. He got there in time for the Ling BBQ Fest. Rained later that night.
Saturday we launched at the pier in San Simeon. The weather was fantastic. Though again, the water visability was aweful. Brendan and I hit up the point while a couple of surf fishing buddies made slowly made there way on foot there. Again, slow fishing.
My surf fishing buddies only managed one Sea Trout for the day. That's almost unheard of there. But that's why it's called fishing right?
Though Brendan managed a nice Ling, I was only able to pull up a bunch Browns and a Sea Trout. Though the Browns were kinda nice size. I tried squid strips, whole squid, scampis, swimbaits, grubs..........the only thing that paid off were the olive/red belly 5 1/2" swimbaits (1oz leadhead). All the fish cleaned had a belly/mouthful of small sanddab-like fish or shiners).
Brendan donated his Ling for dinner that night. We BBQ the fillets and made soft tacos/fajitas. TASTY!!!
Nothing like being with the boyz fishing and bbq'ing up some nice fish on the grill.
The drive back was amazing. I've never seen the islands so clear as yesterday. I counted 4 not counting Catalina.
Great trip as usual!
