What I mean is put preasure on the fish hard, don't let him make long runs, get his nose pointed toward the surface as soon as posible. If you can get him moving up to you then his runs tend to be downward, you'll be able to get over top of the fish and keep him out of the kelp. OK, I know you can't always do this with a big fish, but if you can get the fish under you and work him up and down(vertically) instead of having him makelong horizontal runs you'll land more fish. It works for me, landed two WSB this summer tight to the kelp without getting tree'd.
