A late start got me stuck in the traffic, so I arrived at the beach about 8:00 after an hour and a half on the road. There were some strong off-shore gusts ripping across the bay so I sat on the beach waiting for either the wind or the traffic to die down. The wind changed direction about 9am and I launched into no surf and tied up to the kelp and made bait. I paddled almost to escondido creek, then let the wind
push me back dragging live bait, frozen squid and I tried a mess of different colored plastics. No takers
in 50-35 feet. I didn't even meter any fish except bait. Finally, about 1:00pm, I tied a small jig head onto my lightest set up and managed a couple sand bass in the kelp so I didn't get skunked. Surf was so small I launched and landed completely rigged up. That's the first time I've ever been able to do that in Malibu.
