: I have a scupper pro TW and was wondering if it is ok to rig a drift chute on the stern side. I don't like obstructions in the front of me. Are there any dangers of doing it this way?
Here's what I do. I create a "Trolley" by using a couple of carabineers from Home Depot and about a 12 to 15-foot piece of line. Clip one of the careeners to the bow or stern handle of your kayak. Clip the other to an eyelet/padeye within easy reach. I use my seat attach padeye. Thread your line through both carabineers and tie the ends together and making sure the line is under tension, stretched between the carabineers. Using the loose tag ends of the line below your knot, tie another knot about 6" to a foot below the first knot. In a sense you have tied a large figure 8 with very different sized loops. The large loop will slide around the carabineers and allow you to adjust the position of the smaller loop fore and aft. The smaller loop is where you will clip your drift chute (uses a six foot or better length of line between your drift chute and a brass snap swivel). Now you can sit in your seat, rig up your drift chute and by adjusting your trolley, you can move the drift chute as appropriate for you drift direction and comfort. No more stretching to pull in the chute, just pull the trolley till the snap is at your side. Bye the way this works with an anchor as well.
I like to have the drift chute in the stern myself. that way you are not drifting backwards and can keep an eye on things. Also you are genereally not casting into the wind, but with the wing that way. Just watch the waves and boat traffic.
