Besides waking up late, the weather radio was still reporting large surf, so I decided to hit the harbor.
I got there just before 8. I forgot that the harbor has been undergoing dredging, which made me wonder if that had any impact on the fishing. I took frozen squid and frozen anchovies. There was all the croaker you could imagine and they keep eating the tenticles off my whole squid. I caught a small one and wondered if it would be good bait for a halibut, but threw it back.
I drifted a couple hundred yards outside on the uphill side of the harbor and farmed a sandbass. A very uneventful morning not even a guitarfish for my efforts. On the way back in I saw Tony who had caught a legal butt in about 10' of water, inside the harbor, off the main channel, on live bait.
Water color: murky and green
Water Temp: mid to high 50's
Tide: High and still flowing in at noon
Current: Ripping uphill on the outside
Wind: light offshore
Outside the harbor the waves were big and there was a pack of surfers off Hollywood beach enjoying regular head high and above surf all morning.
On a plus note I tried a semi-swivleless hallibut rig and was tangle free all day, however I did not manage any butts. It is basically a dropper loop on 20lb main (no lower than 20lb), cut open the dropper loop near the knot and uni-tie your leader material on to the long end of the dropper loop. Below the dropper loop tie a snap swivle so you can change weights as needed. I like this better than the three-way swivle and I will be trying some different variations of it till I get the combination that works the best.
