Hi Doug,

I dont think you are going to have any luck seeing a halibut on the bottom unless he's swimming above it. This is a link to site at Lowrance that has a pretty good explanation on fish finders and will help you understand you unit better as you use it. Best way to learn is to use it a lot especially if you know what the bottom and the water column below your boat is like (kelp, boulders, sand beach, mud, anchor going up/down, fish on underneath the boat, etc).

I would also suggest turning off the fish id and try to understand what the signals being returned really mean.
