: Will a fishfinder detect a flounder sitting on the ocean floor. I bought a Piranha 4 portable. Says it has fish ID. Does this mean I can see the depth of where the fish is? First fishfinder and any help is highly appreciated. Thanks.Doug
RE: It will give a signal if the fish is off of the bottom; and the ID will show fish in the different depths; but it can be fooled by other things. It was pointed out to me that sonar pings the air bladder of the target and shows a fish, but if it pings to many bait fish it can signal just one big fish, and also if it pings kelp it can take the ping from the kelp bladder and show a fish also.
Turning off the ID will give you a true signal and help you determine better what is down there.
As for depth; the P4 can show depth but there is a gradient bar in the screen that helps determine the fish depth.
