: Got to Tidelands at 8:00 A.M. Unloaded my kayak and rolled down to the beach. There were 3 Scupper Pro Tw's rigged for fishing on the beach and 3 guys talking and getting ready to go out. It was Jim Sammons of La Jolla Kayak Fishing and a couple of his friends. I had never met him in person before. We talked briefly and they headed out. I got rigged up and launched. Last time I went out I went to Oceanside and my fishfinder wasn't working. When I would turn it on it would just blink on and off. I found the problem the next day. I had layed the transducer down using epoxy. It was comming undone. I decided to use Marine Goop like many people use. So far so good I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Anyway, I decided to go over to the dock at the Coronado Marriot to try and make bait. I saw alot of bait on the fish finder but they didn't want anything to do with my Sabiki rig tipped with squid. Next time I'll bring some cat food. I tried for half an hour and decided to go fishing. I tied on a silver and blue jointed Rebel Spoonbill. I figured if I'm going from one place to another I might as well troll along the way. I headed back twords the bridge. About 50 yards before I got to the sailboats in 14' of water somthing hit the Spoonbill. I stopped and reeled in a short halibut. I released him and continued trolling about 50 ft later somthing really slammed the Spoonbill. It almost turned my kayak around. It fought pretty hard on 12 lb test. I reeled in a 14" spotted bay bass. For thier size those fish really fight hard. I paddeled over to the bridge and drifted around the second pillar with frozen 'chovies for another short halibut. There was a few guys in a boat racing around the area towing a waterskier. I decided to get away from them and go fish the flat in front of the Seal Base. The tide was going out by then so I paddeled to the far end by the pier they have there and caught a spotty trolling the spoonbill on the way. When I got there I dead sticked a frozen 'chovie on 10 lb test and casted a 3" hot pink sparkle Mojo grub with a 1/4 oz leadhead tipped with squid on 6 lb test. I casted out let it hit the bottom in 12' of water and didn't even get 2 cranks and caught 12" a spotted bay bass. The flat was on fire! That little pink grub was killing them. I caught a couple more on the 'chovies too. After a few long drifts I decided to head back in. The wind had started to pick up and it was getting choppy. On the way back in I got slammed again on the Spoonbill at bridge piller # 7. I reeled in a nice 14" sand bass. It was the best day of yak fishing that I have had so far. 10 spotted bay bass, 1 14". 1 14" sand bass. 2 short halibut. All of the bass except 2 were 12" or more. A great day on the water. Back in and loaded up by 1:00 P.M. All fish released. Robert
