Megaladon,
I got one. I don't take it out (on the kayak) that much becuase it's big. It works great, but I also have a couple of 200s which are smaller and work well.
The only time I have used it has been for trolling and drift fishing. I bought a Salmon Mooching reel for drifting which I like much better than any other reel I have used.
I am a big fan of penn baitcasters, because they are inexpensive, easy to repair or have repaired and they hold up pretty good to abuse. I love the freespool with clicker mode especially for trolling. I just have not been in enough situations (on my kayak) where I have been able to throw iron. If I did I would like to have my jigmaster. I usually keep it in a dry bag in the hull.
Another thing I like about these penn reels is that parts are cheap and if I lost a 500 overboard it's not as heart breaking as other equipment. I lost my best penn 200 and that sucked cause they are hard to get in the condition that mine was in, but as for the cash loss, I had two service calls into that reel for $15.00 each.
We have a family sailboat in MDR, I call it a Winnebago with a sail on it. A 30 footer. When we go past Manhattan beach there is a place where the baracuda are everytime, my father likes to sail and does not care to fish, so I take my Jigmaster 500 and send a CD14 green mac pattern 50-75 yards behind the boat at 4-5 knots. At those speeds you have to use the clicker and drag to set it just perfectly so the cudas can take line when they hit. No steel leaders and no fish break off as they all hook up on the back treble. The reel works perfectly and the cudas are big cause they gotta swim fast to catch that rapala.
This is probably a good time to look for a deal on one.
