: If you were a designer, how would you design your ultimate yak. This question has been asked in the past, but I wonder if perseptions on fishing kayaks have changed. Length, width, hatches, hobie pedal thing, TW or no TW. In the past everyone thought the scupper was it period, now I see more people riding wider yaks. Let me know what you guys think.Vic
I am a Marine Designer and so I know the ship building process very well. It all starts and ends with the costumer. First you need to know what the cargo is and then you build a hull around that. Next you need to know how fast they want to get the cargo to port. Finally you have to know where they plan on using this ship.
80% of the kayak fishermen I know are fishermen first and kayakers second. I fall in the second group and so my fishing trips are usually a split between paddling and fishing.
I would first and foremost like to see a kayak that is:
1. very light/under 40lbs
2. long and narrow 26” x 18’
3. flat continues deck
4. large front hatch so that my fishing poles can be stowed low and along the keel and my gear will be in the bow to level off the load.
5. large rear tank well
