Ted,
A good reel that I have found that is made by Penn is the 501 Jigmaster JR. It is about 1/2 as wide as a 500. For the inshore fishing we have in So.Ca. you rarely need all of the capacity of the 500 especialy in a kayak. It is alot easier to cast than the 500 also. I own 3 500's and 1 501. The only time I use the 500's any more is when I go out on a partyboat and am fishing deep yoyoing iron for yellowtail.
