QM:

Saw your earlier post regarding the fastracs. I have used them in SD and elsewhere, so here goes...

Gene sells two versions of the key colors. Deep divers (with spoonbills) and standard versions (smaller bills). I bought both versions in Gene's recommended colors.

I have used these because it was an easy way to get my son on fish. Those trebles are deadly (but rust quickly).

Trolling along the kelp was really productive, the black/gold slayed the calicos (I release all calicos). The problem is that they foul on bits of kelp alot. I have since switched to fishing in middle of a kelp pocket with plastics. less hassle, more action...

Orange/gold worked on the bonito. I even caught bonito trolling over a small feature in Sail Bay in 2000.

Silver/black and silver/blue have not produced for me too well. Silver/black were better.

I trolled them down in Rancho Leonero with no luck, switched to crocodiles and did much better casting to puddlers.

I tried them in the "hard baits for halibut" theme with spectra and a 3-way swivel off Oceanside (sand near rocks) in 60' of water with no luck (but it was the first time in that area and just before this storm)

In 'Baja Catch', Gene does talk about the fact that some lures have the perfect action and will work with all the paint off of them. I have a couple that may be working their way in that category.

I would say that they are good lures. If they're good enough for Gene and Neil Kelly (rest in peace) they're good enough for me. They only have me beat by a few thousand fish!! Seems like Gene really likes the mirrolures lately for their durability.

Gene has a good idea to make the trebles more manageable w/o changing the action. See the book for desc./pictures.

Hope it helps and let me know how you do.

PS I'd highly recommend Gene's book 'King of the Moon'. Very well written and a good read. You can tell that Gene cares deeply about Baja. It is an incredible place of people and unspoiled beauty and the fishing totally blows SD out of the water. One day in the summer of 1995 with an incredible upwelling south of Punta Perico (Carmen Isl. off Loreto), we released ~45+ 80-120# sailfish. The most awesome 10 hours of fishing I've had in 25 years. We saw an amazing variety of marine wildlife that day...pilot whales, dolphins by the 1000's, manta rays, sea turtles, etc...epic. I wish I could've fished Baja in the 50's...
