Went camping at Leo Thurs thru Sun. Launched Friday am. Almost no wind and even less current. I took someone out who was new to kayak fishing. Great day for that. Nice dry launch. Even though the bite was slow we still managed to get into a little action. I was working various plastic baits for almost nothing. Switched to spoons and starting nailing Calicos in about 12ft of water. Carlos ended up with a few Olives, a sandy and a smelt for the day(all released).

The wind and surf picked up a little. We decided to head in. We discussed re entry as we watch the surf break (1-2ft). I headed in so Carlos could watch how it was done. I landed, turned around, and Carlos started paddling in. Unfortunately, he didn't wait for me to wave him in. He paddled right in front of a set wave (3-4ft face). After about 3 secs on the wave, the kayak got turned, pearled and he went down. I jumped in the water to help, Carlos popped up, waved the ok, and I "dragged" the kayak to shore. Unfortunatly, the front hatch on the Pro Explorer didn't seal well and the kayak filled up with sand and water(about 80lbs worth).

Wet but very stoked! Yak angler born. Though I think Carlos would have preferred a dry landing, there is benefit to his experience. Since the surf was fairly minimal, the lesson learned was worth it. If he should wipe out in the surf zone again, and a guide or buddy isn't present, he will have some experience already to draw from.

Unfortunately, I was only to get out on the yak once during the trip. I decided to do some perching Saturday and play with the kids on the beach.

It looks like the CA camping grounds have been hit with some significant increases. 3 nights camping now costs $55. The 2nd car is $5/day on top of the charge for camping (2nd car use to be free). It's still reasonable, I just don't dig the increment they marked it up (over 30%).
