Phil and I met at the at the parking lot at the base of OB Pier at 6 AM and readied to launch. It was around high tide, surf was supposed to be 1-2 with 3 footers, looked bigger to me. We headed out on the south side of the pier. There was a nice slot for us to shoot out and we did so with no problems, although there was intimidating water on either side of us. It is a pretty short paddle to the kelp. I was out to catch dinner, fish tacos. I had squid, anchovies , Ghost Shrimp, that I pumped the day before, and Fish Traps. Phil had just finished his bait tank and wanted to put some in it. Things were off to a slow start as we worked our way out to around 100 ft. I finally get a hookup and it is the off limits Whitefish. Phil got a Whitefish, released then a Sheephead. I ended up tying to a kelp and started chumming bits of anchovie. First the Smelt showed, then the Green Macs, and a few small Barracuda. I hooked one of the Barracuda, before a mac tore off the tail of the FT . Squid on the bottom, pulled up 2 Reds and finally a Sandbass. Saw Phil with a nice bendo before it came undone and another Sandie. We headed in just before noon. The south side of the pier at low tide looked too hairy and there are alot of flat boulders in the water. We paddled under the pier and headed in . Phil surfed and slid like a champ . I had one break right behind me and was sideways and leaning into it hard and managed to keep it together. Loading up, Phil gave me his fish, so I will be having fresh fish tacos tonight.
