Went out of 22nd Street landing on the Westerly to fish the west end of Catalina. Yaks hit the water at about 8am. Water temp was 57 deg (not a good sign), clear and calm. Fished the west edge drop off of the reef and had 5 calicos within the first hour. Fish were deep, between 70 & 100+ feet, so it took 2+ minutes for my 3/4 oz. Fish Trap to reach the zone and several mins. to fish the zone at the correct speed (I only got 10 to 15 casts per hr). Moved around as conditions changed and finished the day w/19 CB to 18". Most were 14"/15" and had 3 dinks. Kept the 1st 2 for dinner and released the rest. The Westerly crew was excellent and used the trip as a possible model for open kayak charters to the islands in the future. All & all it was a great day on the water Gripper Mike put on a great trip and I enjoyed meeting Robert, Mark, Paul and (def) Jack.
I don't know how many yackers realize how great Mothership trips are. If you have the means, go on one. Whether it's Santa Barbara Salmon, San Clemente Isl. or East Cape it dosen't matter. These are fantastic trips.
