Whichever brand you decide to buy, you MUST buy a submersible type. I cannot stress this fact enough. This should be your primary criteria to buying one. A non submersible type will be totally useless if you end up in the water (when you will really need one).
I own both a Standard Horizon and an Icom handheld submersibles. Both units are really good. I prefer the Icom because it has this feature on the screen that shows you what each channel is reserved for (so you know what channel to use).
The submersibles are more $, but you would be more than justified in spending the extra cash. DO NOT buy a non-submersible handheld.
