Met Phil at La Jolla Shores around 5 AM. 2 footers and 6 knots blowing out of the NW. Current was ripping north to south and scattered birds were all over. Phil pulled up the first bait, a Green Mac. I got 1 awhile later and a couple Spanish Macs. Phil wondered into the kelp as I headed west about a mile off the point. I was pulling in an even mix of Calicos and short Barracuda after I cleared the point, on 5" FTs and Storms. Ran into another yaker who said he was stroking the bigger Barracuda on the iron. Paddling back in, I put a Green Mac out long and a silver and black Yozuri Hydromag, fairly short. It wasn't long before the Yozuri went off with the rod tip bouncing hard. After I picked it up and it started taking drag, I was pretty sure what I had. It takes a U turn and I am cranking as fast as I can to take up the slack and as it comes tight , I feel it coming up. 20 yards behind me, the first thing I see is a big fan of a tail. It is tail wrapped, flopping on the surface. I got to watch it break my line and sink out with my $13 plug in it's mouth. I am 2 for 2, it is last Spring all over again (I lost a few, before finally landing 1 in July). I like to fish light line on the kayak, so I lose some fish. It does seem to give me plenty of opportunities.........NEXT TIME
