: : Andy "Iceman" tells about these 2 back to back epic days. I bought a kayak to get me to waters a shorefisherman only dreams about, and now I'am dreaming again of kelp beds and YT vs WSB.I have a question from reading a few journals and that is about Thermoclines; Is it shown on the fishfinder as a band or line and what is the temperature difference. Are the better fishfinders able to locate the thermoclines, like Garmin vs Humminbird?
On my Humminbird, I get what looks like to be a line of debris somewhere in the water column. The return from a thermocline resembles returns I get when there is muck or debris at the surface. Though with a thermocline, the line of "debris" looking return will be somewhere in the water column below the surface.
Sometimes the thermocline will be so distinct, thick, profound, etc that I can get 2 returns (2 seperate sonar readings on one screen). I believe what happens is the signal is strong enough to where it not only bounces off of the thermocline, but it also goes through the thermocline, offering sonar interpretations for 2 returns.
I use Humminbird because they are reasonably priced for what you get. I really like the detachable units (permanent base with removable unit). I haven't use Garmin before but have heard some good things.
Good warranties are of course important. Humminbird offers a 2 year extension for a reasonable price. I think I paid $15 for 2 extra years.
Seeing these guys hook up on the big fish sometimes hurts. The only thing I can compare it to was a 5lb+ Calico towed me several yards the other day. My Abu's drag washers finally died on me. I couldn't reel the Calico in though I had enough drag to still keep him from peeling line. The result was a mini sleigh ride from a Calico bass. Amazing strength in those fish. I better get those drag washers replaced before a smelt spools me.
