Rob,
I keep a compass on my kayak. I also have a small one that slides on my watch band. When going out, try and make some mental note of your heading (or jot them down). If you are out fishing the kelp and you have a visual of where you launched, note what the heading is. If you come across a buoy or something else that you can use as a waypoint, you could plot your way back in. I have been out a few times in fog so thick that it was really spooky. Especially if you get a fish on or something else distracts you enough to lose your bearings. Other than a compass, I think a pfd and a buddy are the smartest things to take with you fishing.
