: : Well since there seem to be no offers of meeting up with anyone to show me the ropes, could anyone tell me where would be a good place to launch out of and which direction to go? Thanks for the support guys, I was starting to feel left out!A compass, Yes that is a good Idea but how does one effectivly use the compass lost in fog? or in the dark? Head east until you bump into something? If i head out of zuma lets say (south facing beach) and go out a mile and the fog comes in I would think to head north, I could pass zuma altogether! Not to sound dim witted but I don't really get it.Thanks AgainRob R
For people new to the sport, I recommend staying within ear's reach of the breaking waves (what about when the waves aren't breaking, lol). I would also check your berring as you're headed out so you at least know which direction you need to head to get in. Do you have sonar? Sonar isn't mandatory to catch fish or fish safely, but if you were lost in fog, you can usually figure out where you're headed by if your depth is increasing or decreasing.
I would also recommend heading in if you notice fog or other signs have bad weather. You usually can see signs on the horizon.
If you really are concerned with fog and don't think you can find your way in, a good handheld GPS can be purchased for around $200. VHF Marine Radios are key as well. You can purchase a submersible handheld vhf for under $200.
