Sorry for empty post.
My minimums for offshore
1-PFD
2-Submersible radio
3-Compass (never used here since I head in at earliest sign of weather)
4-Some way to tie everything you dont want to lose to the yak at all times. You WILL turn over and whatever isnt teathered can be lost including your paddle. Everything secured like this gets stowed below before landing in surf and the paddle gets unleashed since whatever is leashed in surf landings will eventually wrap you up and drag you along through the surf (mostly under the wave while giving you a good pounding to help you remember not to forget or be so cocky).
5-Sponge to mop out water. Big so you can tie it to boat..

: : A lot depends on what type you buy (handheld or mounted). If you go to Walmart or REI and pick a Silva handheld (the cheaper of two but not necessarily the best), you line the arrow on the compass plate with your estimated direction of travel....not north then twist the movable bezel to line north up with the needle. That give you the degrees you travel going out. To get in you reverve the direction of travel 180 degrees and then paddle so you keeep the needle lined up with the north mark.Easier way is to note the degree offset from north going out, then reverse by 180 degrees coming back. Yes, you can miss your destination by a lot but anything is better than paddling to catalina or in circles by mistake. In heavy fog you really cant tell which way you are going except whichever way it is will seem wrong no matter what you use. Very bad feeling. This is best understood by being seen since I cant explain well. My suggestion to really shortcut the learning process is to paddle with one of the guys Jas(on) suggests. Learn safety, surf launch, tips and tricks, and fishing all at once. Bob: : Well since there seem to be no offers of meeting up with anyone to show me the ropes, could anyone tell me where would be a good place to launch out of and which direction to go? Thanks for the support guys, I was starting to feel left out!A compass, Yes that is a good Idea but how does one effectivly use the compass lost in fog? or in the dark? Head east until you bump into something? If i head out of zuma lets say (south facing beach) and go out a mile and the fog comes in I would think to head north, I could pass zuma altogether! Not to sound dim witted but I don't really get it.Thanks AgainRob R
