Looking back on my childhood the bubble and fly was my favorite bonita set up. I use to tie on a feather (really a fly but we called them feathers) 4' behind the splasher (bubble) and then two additional feathers 18" (average bonita size) apart following the initial feather.
When I would hook a bone I would free spool it the fish would swim back to the school and then it was time to put the reel in gear and a swing. Instantly you would go from 1 to 3 fish on. That was common practice until the late 80's when the bones became non exsistant. I know using a three hook method didn't help but I was a conservative. I saw other guys fishing 5 hook set ups. seriously there where so many bones back in the day I tend to think It's a combination of over fishing as well as fish cycles has led to thier decline.
I'v also used bubble and fly in freshwater for trout with excellent results. When all the fish want is the fly you can tear it up with this method. You'll out cast and out fish the fly tanglers. Another method that I've seen work when the fish are deeper and no other lure will work. Try tieing your main line to a torpedo sinker ( size depends on conditions) tie about a 4' liter on the other ring and then tie on your fly. This was very popular way back in the day when they used to make rods specifically for fishing the these feathers in Salt Water. Flourocarbon might not be a bad idea for the liter material. I've seen the feather shut down a wide open baracuda bite on the jigs to where the feathers where the only thing the cuda would bite. I would put all my confidence in a fly. I've seen them produce fish like no other lure when the conditions are right.
