I don't want to sound like an old mother hen... because I am not, but having experienced medical emergency firsthand I would like to ask everyone participating in our crazy sport to always keep in mind that pain, bleeding or trauma does not arrive with long notice.
Ask yourself in the moment of perfect weather, calm water and intense bite, what would I do if me or my buddy would start to bleed profusely?
Lost consciousness? Am I prepared? did I rehearse? what are my precautions? plan B?
The distance between having a great time and sheer terror is a very short one...
Also a good practice is to land ashore, unload your gear back to the truck, return and purposefully dump in the surf... just to see how "good we are". Short of it is, we're not, grizzled old warhorses we think we are...
FWIW... did not intend to scare anyone, just take it from someone who has been there a few times.
