Wow! What a day! Paul and I were expecting to have -maybe- twenty people show up and when it came time to hand over the jackpot we had 25x$10 to line the watersoaked pockets of our winner.
The morning was perfect as perfect can be at J St. Not a breath of wind at the 8am launch and after hearing that the only boundary was the Cornado Bridge a few miles to the north the gang scattered like BBs on ceramic tile. Some people went all the way across to the Coronado Cays, others went into the harbor and some tried their luck on the flats and around the channel.
11am came quickly, it seemed and the wind picked up right on que. We weighed in 19 legal fish (a few folks let single fish go before the weigh-in) and almost everyone had tall tales about the massive number of short fish they couldn't stretch to 12". The crowd assembled for what ended up being an exciting weigh-in as we had 4 guys weighing the three fish limit and no one was a clear leader.
Janette Weintraub had paddled in early and fired up the bbq so food was hot and delicious by the time everyone had packed up their kayaks. We all owe her a big thanks.
We tallied the weights and handed a nice chunk of change over to Ed Whited. Ever the gracious winner he claimed that he "got lucky". Apparently Ed keeps a great big stockpile of luck in his kayak as he is now 2 for 2 in kayak tournament wins this year. (Ed won the January SDSC tournament earlier this year).
On behalf of Paul Weintraub and myself I want to thank everyone who came and fished with us today. It was great to see so many folks having a great time on AND off the water.
