Launched from baby beach at 5:30 and dragged a Frenzy in front of the slips of the inner channel on the way out for 2 spotties. Switched to heavier gear and a Mac pattern P-Line Predator(http://tinyurl.com/efo7) and paddled along the drop-off to the headlands but Mr. T must have had fathers day breakfast somewhere else. Found only smelt on the southern edge of the kelp so filled up the tank with them while small slimers and calicos were boiling all around me but saw nothing bigger. Slow trolled smelt around to the north past lots PB's for nothing and saw nothing caught. Stopped at the north edge to try picking up some small anchovies there on a sabiki but it was more trouble than they were worth so I started throwing plastics around instead while still soaking the smelt. The Helena dropped hook down current 50 yards away and brailed bait for a while but I only saw 2 small checkerboards caught. When they left I picked up a few better Calicos to about 3# (I guess I should thank them sometime for chumming up some fish for me). Quietman came scooting by on 'Jarbrew' with the trolling motor and later hailed on VHF to put me on a huge raft of large 'dines and chovies outside the green buoy at the harbor entrance and I fought of the barries for some quality bait; thanks again QM. Close call with 2 Cigarettes doing abot 40 knots on the way in. QM and I both hit the surfline at Doheny for nada, worked back into the harbor and called it a day around noon. A long paddle for little action but good weather/water conditions and company. All fish released.
Back out later this week for a rematch!
Keith
