Shel,
I am not sure if Spike came up with the bowline for a kayak, but he has been around long enough that some of the credit has to go to him. For the cheapest piece of equipment on the deck, it is worth it's weight in gold.
When fishing, I don't have the bowline under the hatch straps. It is a great tow line. I take the clip off the padeye I installed in the cockpit and clip it to the front handle and it makes for dragging your kayak across the sand very simple. Launches like Broad Beach Road at Trancas have a good stretch of sand between the stairs and surf and dragging is much easier than wheels.
The bowline is also the point you attach your drift chute too. This way the drift chute can be adjusted from the bow back to the center of your hull depending on conditions.
It is also good for an emergency tow line for vessel assist. I used half inch hollow poly braided rope to make mine.
I will mount my fishfinder up on the yellow warning sticker (or close to there) on the deck and probably put the tranducer infront of the front scupper on the starboard side. I am still thinking I might use a small dry bag for the battery.
When I put together my bait well, the battery will be in a small box behind the seat on the deck with an on off switch.
My Fishfinder will be here Friday or Monday. I will be making a digital video on it's installation and also put together a webpage like some of the others I have posted here on Jason's site. If I do it right it will be as good as my Reel Maintenance Page.
