The Father's Day Fishing Derby was a great success for all and especially for me.
The Kayak Connection and a few other local establishments raised over $600.00 for the Monerey Bay Salmon and Trout Restoration Project.
We had 20 entries. The water was clear and the weather was beatuiful. I dropped in a live sardine at 6:15am and by 6:20 had landed a 9pound 8ounce flattie, which proved to be the heaviest fish of the day. Incredibly lucky!
After weighing the fish at 9am, I went to a different area and caught two more 7 + pounders for my first ever halibut limit!
Jonathan, the perennial winner of the event, was the only other contestant to weigh in a flattie, a nice 6+.
We BBQ'd my smaller ones and most of Johathan's and I drove away with a new OK Caper on top of my car, next to my Scupper Pro.
It was really great to see the turnout for this Derby, more than twice as many entrants as previous Derbies. I met a few locals and a few people I've only seen on the boards.
Next Derby here is Sept 8th I think, and should prove to have more action, as rockfish and lingcods will be legal then, rather limited targets this time.
Now I just need to figure out how to turn a Caper into a Prowler!
In all sincere humility, but with bragging rights till Sept......
Allen
