I dont know what is hitting at present and I fished further north than where you will be but this is good source for info:

Most likely fluke, trout, stripers (bass) and choppers blues will be running by this time. Little early for albacore offshore, but thats also a possibility. In general a great time to be there.
You can cruise the beach looking for birds and just stop and cast to the schools. Action can be found on the beach or within 1/2 mi of shore if you are lucky and line a yak up. Plenty of headboats for all types all over the area since there are many harbors. Eay beach access everywhere,,,over sand.
Water temp is going to be muc colder than So Cal so breathable waders, paddle jackets would be a bare minimum unless you have dry suits.
By the way, this is also one of the top periods for strippers aroung Boston and Cape area if you plan future trips. Great kayak water there.
There are also a few people starting to fish from yaks in Sandy Hook area and some good shops (once again in Sandy Hook area). Surf is much smaller but usually a beach break.
Good Luck and let us know how ou do.
Bob
