I got down to Carlsbad around noon. It was a zoo! Everybody and thier brother and sister was there. No place to park at all. I headed South on Coast Highway looking for a place that at least had somewhere to park. I went as far South as Salona Beach and the only spot that wasn't packed was Seaside, just North of Salona Beach. There was pleanty of free parking in the parking lot there. The water is only a stones throw away and the surf was small. I unloaded and got down to the water and waited a few minutes to check out the swells. I found a lull and launched. There were a couple of boogie boarders messing around in the small surf. I started paddling out and a larger set was building outside. I held up and kept my bow perpendicular to the incoming waves and whitewater. I found another lull and headed out taking a couple of small ones over the bow. It felt good. I had never fished here before so I headed straight out to a kelp bed about a mile out. It looked like a fishy area. I tried to make bait but was unsuccessful, so I threw Fishtraps and Scampis for a couple of hours for nada. It was nice being out there though. There were no other kayakers
and only a couple of boats a couple of miles away. There was very little wind and a small swell. I decided to head back in. I landed dry with no problems. I saw some guys unloading thier kayaks in the parking lot and talked to them. They are regulars that come there often. They only spearfish. They had some serious spear guns. I told them where I was fishing at and they said I should have been fishing another kelp bed to the South of the one I was fishing. Oh well. They were after white seabass and yellows. I'm going back there again soon. In this sport you always learn somthing everytime you go out.
It was a beautiful day on the water.
