The foot well solution worked fine for me. It is interesting that I can't get a reading when I placed the compass flat...I tried a few in the store and they all seemed to do the same thing--the compass spun so the top of the internal ball was visable and nothing else. Did Ocean Hunter make any adjustments to the compass to make it work flat? Just curious...
: : The answer is no! I bought one today and took Jas' advice (thanks). When placed flat, the compass does not have a visable reading...: : Can the Richie flush mount compass be mounted flat? I have a FND and long legs so my feet tend to be in the last foot well. There are no other vertical places to mount anything on the deck...Thanks. Good question. I've seen them mounted flat and they still work. In my Scupper TW, my feet rest in the last footwell. I mounted my compass up against the end of the footwell. I have to move my foot to see it though that's not a problem. Once mounted, it only sticks out about 1/8". I placed it where the arch of my foot would rest. That way I don't feel it when my foot rests up against the last footwell.Hope that makes sense.jas I've seen the Ritchie dash style compass mounted on 2 kayaks flat. It worked on both. Oceanhunter is another local yak angler that mounts his like that on all of his kayaks. You asked if it worked? Well, from my experience it does. I don't go out of my way to recommend people mounting it that way, but I have seen it work. We even put a GPS along side of it to guage accuracy. Sorry it didn't work out for you. If you're still looking for a vertical place to mount the compass, try the last footwell like I suggested. Just move your foot out of the way when you want to view it. Position it around the area the arch of your foot rests up against.jas
