Newbie question...which is better?

Hello,

I am looking to purchase a kayak for the first time, and wanted to get the opinion of some pros.

I am looking to purchase a used 1-person kayak (in the 300-400 range), for exercise, and to do some fishing in Newport Bay.

I noticed that there are 2 kinds. One is the open kind (that looks more like a low cut canoe, and the other kind is the sealed variety.
What are the pros and cons of both types, in terms of handling, comfort,etc? Any additional info or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I have never kayaked before so I do not know the "feel" of either
