Launched from the Santa Cruz Harbor on Thursday morning at 7am. I got a late start because I had been up late smoking one of the two king salmon I got on the Wild Wave Tuesday.
I dropped in a frozen herring just outside the harbor on a 3' leader with a rattrap, 4oz sliding sinker. I was heading for Lighthoue point and knew Brian G had nailed a giant striper along that stretch before he got nailed by a sea lion last week.
As I worked the edge of the kelp beds there in 18-20 ft of water, I got a halibut hit which resulted in a 26" female.
Forget the lighthouse!
I stayed in that area for 1 1/2 hours wowrking the edges. I got four more hits and finally kept the last fish after I shortened the leader to about 15" because the water was so dirty (some sort of brown algae bloom).
Second fish was about 28-29 inches.
I paddled in early, a happy man.
Today I took my 4 yr old boy Max to the Capitola Wharf to fish for shiner perch. He caught about 40 perch, all catch and release- "Look dad, flying fish!"
I pinned one shiner onto my giant surfcasting rig and let it out with the big bobber setup.
An hour later, I look out, my bobber is gone, my rod is bent, Fish On!
I thought it was a ray at first becasue of the tremendous, sustained run. With assistance from a regular at the wharf we netted a 30", 10 lb Striped Bass. Not bad for perch fishing!
Tomorrow it's ling cod at Davenport landing early. Love to have some other kayakers there. Kevin and Co. might appear. It could be real fun, but the wind will be coming up early so launch time is pre-6am.......
