I started fishing off my inflatable kayak and still use it on occasion and when I'm bringing friends out. But a hard shell is far superior for too many reasons to list here. If you do go with an inflatable, get a VERY high quality one. The Stearns IK140 and Sevylor Diveyak are the lowest quality I would go with (and are solid performers), but anything less in cost and quality is probably not a good idea. I've seen the Sharper Image kayaks and was not too impressed. Just make sure to buy something durable and well-built, and be ready to patch holes and leaks on a regular basis.
Hi all,I am considering getting a recreational kayak for fising bays and lakes. I wanted to get your opinions on this item I stumbled across on ebay, a portable kayak from sharper imagehttp://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3619136789&category=36122The attraction to this for me is its portability, I drive a sedan and a 9 ft kayak on a roofrack is alot of stress. With this, it will fit in my trunk no prob. However, I am concerned about a few things such as drag, handling, and durability. In my novice opinion, a traditional recreational kayak would appear to be much stronger, handle better, glide faster thru the water. If the portable one can accomplish most things a traditional one can do with not too much compromise, I would consider it.I have no kayak experience (have done some rowboat), but plan on going out 2-3 times a week. Any opinions would be appreciated.TIAKen
