: Launched a little after 5 AM. Can you still call it surf when it is that small? Barely a ripple crossing the reserve. Felt very tropical with a 15 minute light rain. Breeze was around 5 kts the rest of the morning. Kept it simple and left the bait tank behind. Made 2 Spanish and stuck one out long and one short. Saw a nice boil at 6 AM, along the kelp a little further out than the hotel and as I headed toward it saw a couple more. Tossed the Fishtrap and had a big ol YT come right under me, chasing bait. Kept working that area. Lots of Smelt puddling. You could tell something big was cruising around as the Smelt would light up, running every few minutes. Finally hooked up around 8 AM, on my Penn 525, fresh 15# Cuda Line, and (one) of my new Shimano sticks. Got the fish to color several times and it would run back down 10 yards. I had drifted near the kelp and tightened the drag as I watched it try to burrow through a group of stringers. Pulled it, and one of the stringers up and popped it. Looked like a traveller, long and lean with an empty belly, maybe 20#. My one and only for the month of July, I'll take it........Andy
Nice catch Andy! Good job on getting him out of the kelp.
