You don't have stairs to contend with at San elijo like you do at so. carlsbad. Plus, the reefs are more defined from the Pipes all the way to cardiff reef. At So. Calsbad it is more of a beach break. This makes the surf entry/exit easier to predict and to locate channels. Both places can get big surf so you do need to know your limits.
