I carry both, one GPS and two compasses. Compasses are cheap and light. In the army we always had one guy use the GPS and map and another checking by map, compass, protractor. I think for our use, a compass is not used as a check device, but as a backup to get a general direction back to land.

: I have made mind up on getting a GPS but do I need a compass also. I paddle at the most about 1 to 3 miles out. Do I need a back up or just more batteries for the water proof GPS?Over, Out, Mark
