types of bait

I have finally finished outfitting my kayak for open water and am ready to try it out the only question I have left is how much bait should I catch for kelp beds and what type of baitfish should I try to get(jacksmelt,green macs, spanish macs)? I would like to try to target yellowtail and WSB as well as calicos and barries. If I go out of Newport I can pick up chovies at the bait barge but I would not always go out through Newport.
