: Dave,With weather like you describe, breathable waders and dry top sound like a must. I think that rain and a sit inside kayak are a dangerous combination, unless there are people with experience that can comment otherwise. Wetsuits suck. Ever since I bought my breathable stocking foot chest waders, I'll never go back to a wetsuit on freshwater. Make sure you wear a belt and PFD.That said, you can get into a kayak that will keep your ass out of the water and make your fishing days longer and easier. My first thought would be the Cobra Fish n Dive and then maybe one of the Hobie pedal system kayaks. I have not tried the new Malibu Extreme, so I can't tell you if it will work.I'd stay away from the Ocean kayaks except for the new Prowler that is going to be released by the end of the month. Ocean kayaks are too wet for cold water--year round use and several of the models will just outright perform very poorly when dragging 8-9 colors of lead core. Even with waders, you don't want to be sitting in a puddle of 50 degree water. That coldness will go through the waders and through any insulating layers you might be wearing. At your height, weight and fitness level, the Fish n Dive will perform much differently for you, compared to what the rest of the couch potatoes will tell you. If you can test out a Hobie, it looks like a great kayak. I end up aournd the kelp and the surf enough that the peddles look like a project for me.Call some shops and see if you can demo or rent.-Ted
I just went from a Fish and Dive to the Malibu eXtreme, what a great yak, fast, dry, stable, roomy, tons of storage. Way better than the FnD.
Extreemly well laid out, 15 ft x 31 inches, floats in 5 inches of water with me in it! Seems even more stable than the FnD. They make em and sell em, no dealers...Cliff, New England
