I'm sure the macks will work if the presentation is right. I've hooked them on macks, but I've never tried dead macks. Use an egg sinker to get that mack down there. Normally I'd fly line them, but if they're dead, they'll need some weight on there.
Believe it or not, fish traps can work GREAT on Threshers. I've caught as many on Fishtraps as I have live macks. Use enough weight to keep it down there while you slow trollm'. Tip it with a little squid if you have it. You need a treble for the tail hook, though I've never had a problem mouth hooking them w/ a single hook.
If you really want them to come out and play, catch some live macks and flyline them. The lures work great for trolling. If you get tired, you can just soak a mack, put that clicker on, and drift around. Letm' have a big healthy run when he bites that mack. A lot of times you get a "false run"; that's the Thresher smacking your bait. Clicker goes off and then stops. The mack is sitting there suspended in the column. The Thresher will return to eat the bait...........
Get ready for some aerials. Watch your line as the angle diminishes and the line rises. You can usually predict a takeoff if you're watching that.
Remember about keeping good distances from other yakers. We don't need a sequal to the classic hooking incident. Going to have to add that day/story to the journal section. To protect the innocent, I won't mention Scotty's name. lol.
