Johnny “ The Legend” Ceviche and myself drove up from La Mesa to the Pt. The drive took 1 hour and 15 minutes. We met Hammerhead around 6am at the far north end of the harbor where there is a small beach called baby beach. This was Johnny’s and my first time here. Mark was our local connection, providing us with the perfect driving direction and paddling directions.
It was a 15-minute paddle out of the harbor and another 45 minutes to the red channel buoy at the point where the Thresher sharks had previously been caught.
The skies were over cast and the water was choppy and just got windier and choppier as the day went on.
Today I saw two other yak fishermen in green and red yaks who were fishing for bass at the edge of the kelp. There were maybe 30 PB'rs and a couple of party boats on the horizon.
On the way out I trolled a small silver and green krock. In the past this spoon has been a good producer of large mackerel, but all I got today was a couple of short slimmers and so I was fly lining a 12”er when I heard a noise behind me. I turned around to see some thing real big boil on the bait, but when I grabbed my pole I accidentally hit the handle putting by reel in gear and after a short run the bait was ripped from the hook.
I didn’t see any seals, but I didn’t see a shark tail either, so what it was is officially a mystery.
There was lots of bait and we were able to catch some quality macks. The three of us slow trolled the macks and what ever was our favorite lure in about 90’ of water northwest from the point to just about in front of the Laguna hospital. Here I left the other two. As they continued northwest, I paddled in to the edge of the kelp and trolled back to the point in about 60’ of water.
I didn’t get a shark but I did pick up three sand bass to 2 lbs x 16” on a 6” Storm in mullet color. This is the same plastic that I caught a 6 lb x 24” calico bass at LJ with earlier in the week.
I headed back in at 11:00 and haven’t heard how the others did.
Dana Pt is a beautiful place and the people of the town take real good care of the park. I wish I lived closer so that I could fish there more often.
