: : : When a fish hits and your on, do you guys reel in the other line? How? Or do you just leave it out there and hope it doesn't get tangled?Does it only matter when you're not being towed?THanks guysHopefully I'll see you guys at the La Jolla tournament. If it will be my actual first time out in the open ocean do you reccomend I goGabe Hey Gabe,I focus all my attention on the rig with the fish. Those first few minutes are critical and you don’t want to try to do two things at once.I can’t think of a better time to go out on your first ocean kayak-fishing trip than this weekends LJ benefit kayak-fishing tournament. You’ll have the opportunity to see more rigged kayaks and talk with more ocean kayakers than any other weekend of the year.Looking forward to seeing you there,John RE:Can you describe the launch area in terms I can understand? Like the beach area or how big the waves are in the early morning? Do you think everyone can get out through the surf? I ask this not knowing the area and to help anyone else that reads your reply. Thanks EE
Hey Davey
This is the most recent pic I have of the LJ beach launch and this is probably what kind of surf you can expect this Saturday. The launch area is in the back of a depression in the coastline. Technically I wouldn’t really call it an open ocean surf launch because it’s so protected. I’ve watched tourist from all over the world rent kayaks and paddle out for what I think is their first time. A few of them get turned and roll on the first couple of tries but eventually everybody makes it though the small surf in good health and it’s all good fun.
It’s a whole different story once you paddle out past the point and the yellow buoys that mark the end of the preserve. You’ll be in the open ocean then and you’d better be prepared for anything.
