: The biggest mistake people make when thinking about freshwater trolling is the the need for a touring hull. Slow and I mean slow trolling is a must. Touring hulls have a hard time handling the weight of deep water trolling. The deeper and heavier you go, the more pull to one side. The wider barge style Tandems, Fish N Dive or Drifer seem to pull lead core much easier and straighter than the touring hulls of the Scupper and I suspect the Extreme. I can get over 80 feet deep with 9 color 18lb lead core and a rapala, so that eleminates the need of a down rigger. I do this regularly from a Tandem. You can see a video on the News and media page of this website of my son and I leadcore trolling.Last, the Scupper and Drifter are not good coldwater kayaks, they are great kayaks for other uses, but I like to keep my rear end out of 58 degree and colder water as much as I can. I just saw the new Drifter and the redesign may be a winner. I personally prefer a kayak with larger center hull access hatches and that is why I moved away from Ocean Kayaks. Please remember, kayaks are very personal, everyone likes different things.-Ted

I bought an Aegean kayak for a dry ride and just use crates when I go out. If you pack light then it is a great trolling kayak. The thing I have noticed is in my rods; I use Berkley Reflex rods and the trolling 8 1/2 casting rod is far better than the spinning rod they make. I use them both but the casting rod has a better flex for trout, catfish, bass. I bought the 10-25 lb and it is by far the better rod and for $25.00 can't be beat.I also would not go farther than 8 1/2ft because it can be a pain when bringing in a fish with a longer rod.
