LIng Cod are not know for being line shy. if you are getting broken off from abrasion use a #25 mono leader. i perfer Berkeley Big Game. most importantly, always check you line carefully after every fish. if you're using #17 test that has a few nicks in the line, what you have essentially is 8 pound test.
: Just curious & daydreaming at work, really. This summer I've been busted off several times in the kelp by what I suspect are large lingcod. I usually fish with 17lb stren tied directly to whatever plastic I have, and the breakoffs seem to come from the fish dragging the last few feet of line over a rock, etc. I'm wondering, with all of the high-tech line out there, if anyone has had success with a tougher leader material that might allow me to keep fishing the lighter line and not lose as many lures (not to mention the hawg lings)? A 2-3 foot leader is what I had in mind.Thanks,-Sean
