Well we ended up launching at Cardiff on sunday morning. ib_boyd and I took a newbie out for his first yak experience. He is not much of a fisherman, but he did catch a legal sandie and a solid sunburn. And I think he had a pretty good time. Although I don't think he will be buying a kayak anytime soon.
Anyway, we had a late start and eventually launched at 6:30 or so in to small playful surf on the south side of the reef. The water was pretty warm, probably the upper 60's, and dirty green. I had tough time making bait, but eventually found 3 big spanish macs over by swamis. Meanwhile, ib_boyd had the hot had nailing quite a few sandies and one toad of a halibut. This brut measured 35 inches and a solid 20 pounds. I had to hand it to him, he caught this on a 3" halloween swimbait with 10# line. I am sure he will post a picture as he is quite proud. For me however, it was a day of heart break. I hooked up twice in the same area on the spanish macs and lost both. The last one took a monster run into the kelp for an awesome sleigh ride. I figured that I would lose him in the kelp so I thumbed the spool to try and slow him down but he ended up breaking me off. Of course I have been running those moments back in my head wondering if I should have just let him run to the kelp and then try and finesse him out or did I just not have much of a chance. I was only fishing 15# line at the time. None the less, it was a great day on the water, the wind was offshore in the morning and light to none for the rest of the time we were out there. We also met a fellow kayak angler in a yellow extreme. I'm sorry I didn't catch your name, but it was good fishing with you.
I am thinking of fishing there again next weekend (sunday?) if anyone wants to join me. I need to retrieve a hook.
Kevin
