The kids and I went up to King Harbor in Redondo Beach to scope out the area (launch ramp, parking, facilities and just general networking) for the Jerry Esten tournament next weekend. Here are my findings and if anybody from Orange County or points further south wants to meet for breakfast and carpool up let me know.
· Plenty of parking and you can validate at the sports fishing office with a purchase. Though as I understand it the parking is only 4 dollars if you are hand launching and the validation will give you a flat rate of 3 dollars for the day.
· The launch area is behind the Saltwater Lagoon (a pay to play recreation area) and a restaurant called Latitudes. It looks like you can drive right to the launch area to unload (though a longer vehicle may be tight) there is a small floating dock at for the actual launch. After you unload you have to move your vehicle to the parking area.
· The bait receiver is just a few hundred yards WNW of the launch area.
· Now as far as the fishing goes, Sunday there was a very bad red tide condition so I would guess there is no surface action going on. I talked to the skipper of one of the sport boats and he suggested heading for the point and fishing sandies but the kids and I went to a beach on the SE corner of Santa Monica bay and I was watching the sport boats with my binocs. The boats seemed to be fishing fairly tight to the beach in that area with a lot of bent sticks. The skipper I spoke to did say there are a number of nice flatties caught just outside and up from the jetty.
